Have you welcomed your bundle of joy into the world and want to make sure you have the most beautiful photos of your newborn? Whether it's your first baby or your fifth, capturing these precious moments is priceless.

But with a squirmy, fussy infant in tow, you may be wondering how to make them look their best for the camera lens! With our experienced photographer on hand to guide you every step of the way, we've put together this handy guide for older newborn photography and how to keep your newborn calm, quiet, and content during the shoot.

Newborn photography is one of the toughest, but most rewarding genres of photography. Getting newborns to cooperate is an art form and although it takes patience and a lot of practice, there are some tips that can help the little ones love you. Let's explore.

How to soothe an older newborn for a photoshoot:

An older newborn is classed as a baby between 5-12 weeks old, and although they are more alert and interactive than a newborn who is under 5 weeks. Here are some tips to help soothe and comfort them:

TIP 1

Feed your baby before the photo session. This will help ensure that your little one is full and content when it comes time for the shoot. Hungry babies make for unhappy subjects, and chances are your baby won't be in the mood for a photoshoot if they're peckish.

TIP 2

Be prepared to swaddle your baby. Swaddling helps babies feel safe and secure, so having some ready-made swaddles or wraps on hand can be helpful during the shoot. It will also make them feel more comfortable when they are moved into different poses.

TIP 3

Set the mood. Have a warm and cozy atmosphere ready for the photoshoot. This will help your baby relax and stay calm throughout the session. We always recommend bringing your child's favorite white noise machine or musical mobile to place near the set.

TIP 3

Bring along something that reminds your baby of home. Bringing items such as a favorite blanket or stuffed animal will help put your little one at ease and make them feel right at home during the photoshoot.

TIP 4

Make them feel loved & secure. Spend some time cuddling your baby before and after the shoot. This will help them feel secure and loved during their older newborn photography session.

Older newborns tend to move more than younger babies, making them a bit trickier to photograph. However, with a little patience and some of these tips, you can make sure they are as comfortable and as relaxed as possible during your shoot – resulting in beautiful photos that will be cherished for years to come.
